The many important qualities new real estate agents must have.

Today I am talking to people out there who might be considering real estate as their next career. We’re seeing a lot of people moving out of other careers lately. Some are watching HGTV and just think that agents have big lives, expensive toys, and travel a lot. Some of that can be true, but I’m here to tell you a little bit about what truly happens when you get into the real estate industry.

If you are considering this career, start by asking yourself: Am I a self-starter? Am I able to work under my own direction or be on a team and have someone tell me what to do? Am I able to follow those directions, set good habits, and work hard without anyone holding me accountable?

“Make sure you are driven and patient enough.”

As an agent, you will need to be able to answer “yes” to these questions. Agents have to prioritize their days, stick to a schedule, set their own hours, and work their own leads. Still, some of the benefits include setting your own hours and working from home.

When entering this career field, start by contacting everyone in your sphere of influence. You will have to shift the mindsets of your loved ones who aren’t used to seeing you as an agent. This transition may feel a bit like an uphill battle. However, one way you can overcome that is by educating yourself. When you enter a neighborhood gathering, for example, you need to be ready to talk about what’s happening in your local market.

Another thing you should know about this industry is that a lot of people left it when the market got slower in 2022. Therefore, there was more work for the people who stayed, they just needed to be willing to work harder. Sometimes you’ll have to be willing to work long hours and/or weekends. However, this is possible if you have a strong and supportive network of people around you.

I have been in this business for 25 years and have 30 agents, and I love encouraging and mentoring new agents who want to grow their businesses. If you’re willing to put in the work, this can be an extremely fulfilling career, with the potential for a lot of income in the future.

Therefore, when you get started, make sure you are driven and patient enough. Also, a good rule of thumb is to have about six months of income saved up before starting this career so you can sustain yourself before your business picks up.

If this career path is something you are interested in, I’d be happy to sit down with you and talk more about how it all works. I’d love the opportunity to get to know you a little bit and talk about whether or not real estate is the right career for you. Call or email me anytime for more information.
